Your Italian Butler
Located in a shophouse space along Dunlop Street opposite Sim Lim Tower, this 40-seater Italian restaurant boasts a warm, elegant charm. At Your Italian Butler, the dining concept is unlike any other Italian diner; they adopt an omakase style of dining whereby chefs will tailor your meal according to your preferences, and whip up plates a la minute using the season’s freshest produce.
Stepping into the informal, classic yet unpretentious diner. Butler, Chef Mino welcomed us warmly and sat us down onto comfy leather seats before enquiring about our personal favourites and preferences, appetite, dietary requirements, and the number of courses we’d like to have.
Here, they offer up to 13-course meals, and we had the 5-course meal that day. For starters we had foccacia, 2 types of cheeses, a Caprese salad, premium parma ham with melon, and a rocket salad tossed lightly with salt and pepper. According to Chef Mino, he makes all the cheeses at home himself! As for the parma ham and melon, I loved the contrast in taste and textures of this classic pairing; the melon was sweet with a slight crunch, balancing the strong flavours of the ham.
Upon our order, the chef promptly rolled the bread dough into a thin layer, gave it a generous sprinkle of herbs, before pushing it into the oven. The focaccia was then sliced into triangles and served hot and fresh out of the oven. Crusty on the outside and fluffy on the insides, it was a perfect start to the meal.
Next, to warm our tummies up, we were served a Roasted Pumpkin Soup. Made by blending roasted pumpkin with herbs, black pepper and milk instead of cream, the soup had a creamy consistency without being overly cloying or heavy on the palate. Unlike the usual processed pumpkin soups, their rendition boasted great depth of flavour, thanks to the sweet prawn head juices and dash of white wine that the chef finished the dish with.
Next, came the star of the meal – a whole Steam-Baked Red Snapper with Roasted Vegetables and Potatoes. The platter was brought to our table, sliced and portioned in front of our very eyes while we watched in awe (and excitement). Seasoned with a dash of Himalayan pink salt, extra-virgin olive oil, and white wine, the fish meat was flaky, tender, and clean-tasting.
Lamb-lovers should go for their Lamb Fillet with Spinach and Bean. Cooked till a slight pink in the centre, the lean yet succulent meat was well-marinated and bursting with flavour. The bed of spinach was also well-cooked and had a silky smooth texture which I relished.
Being smaller eaters, our tummies were already bursting from all the food by the time we had this fragrant Truffle Gnocchi with Mushrooms. It came tossed with a light cream sauce, drizzle of truffle oil, and parmesan. Like the other dishes, this was bursting with flavours and textures – saltiness from the parmesan, umami from the juicy mushrooms, and the tender, chewy bite of the gnocchi. Oooh.
There’s always a separate stomach for dessert, amirite? We concluded our meal with Handmade Italian Ice-cream in two flavours which was hands down, one of the best I’ve ever had. Creamy yet light and natural tasting, the coconut flavour was an excellent palate cleanser. Having tried many versions of hazelnut ice cream, this one takes the cake for its intense, rich nutty flavour which was fortunately not overpowered by any dairy or sweetener used. Smooth and light on the tongue, it tasted like eating the nut itself!
