Yeo Keng Nam Chicken Rice  – Chicken out? 杨庆南(传统)海南鸡

The glutton family has re-visited many of the famous chicken rice stalls countrywide except Yeo Keng Nam chicken rice; this is our family first trip to try this seemingly famous chicken rice shop.

Chicken rice ($16.80)

Yeo keng nam chichen rice 2We ordered both the white steamed chicken and roasted chicken, Yeo Keng Name has been around for many years and famous for the chicken rice, we have our expectations on the chicken since the shop has won many accolades and rave review. Unfortunately, both the steamed white chicken and roasted chicken turned out to be a complete disappointment. The steamed white chicken was not juicy or moist but hard and tough, it was featureless even with the sauce doused over it.

Yeo keng nam chichen rice 1The roasted chicken was not anything fair better. We are perplexing what really went wrong with Yeo Keng Nam? How can a name associate with chicken rice produce such poor quality chicken? Are there using frozen chicken or “cut corner” when preparing the chicken?

Yeo keng nam chichen rice 3The rice was not impressive as well, it lacked of the fragrance from the chicken stock and the garlicky smell, it was a plate of rice without much of the character. Even the soup was not as tasty as any ordinary chicken rice stall on the street. The chili sauce was just….sigh….. enough for the critics but if you are a chicken rice fan, perhaps this is not the right place for you.

Clayout Binjan ($11.20)

The chicken rice was not worth for the visit and we left with other zi char dishes for review. The claypot eggplant finally brought us back some hope with the melt in your mouth eggplant and heavy seasoning. This is the best of the night and at least all of us agree the claypot eggplant was good.

Fried French bean ($9.00)

The French bean was quick fried and crunchy, drizzled with bits of fried garlic. Overall an ordinary dish that nothing worth to comment.

Sliced fish with spring onion ($13.40)

The ci zhar dishes from YKN somehow taste better than their star chicken rice, at least the sliced fish fried with spring onion was reasonable in taste though not fantastically good.

Cereal prawn ($17.90)

We got some hard time to recall the taste of the cereal prawn, too ordinary and not be able to create a good impression in our memory.

Overall, Yeo Keng Nam Chicken Rice could have lost its glory from it prime time. Glance through the media coverage and the accolades about Yeo Keng Nam chicken rice on the wall, we are feeling sorry for them the diminishing standard in the chicken rice standard. Why is it so? Perhaps only the owner has the answer.
