Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum 同心居上海点心小吃

This is another one of the stores that I kept going back to since I was a little kid. I owe my love for Sze Chuan Hot and Spicy soup (Suan La Tang) to this stall! I remember back when it was still located at Margaret Drive Food Centre, I would always be buzzing with excitement and anticipation when we went there, since it wasn’t located near my house. That said, good food is always worth the travel! As time passed, the visits became further and further apart. Soon, the only times I had access to Suan La Tang 酸辣汤 was when my family cooks it using those ready-made packets. (and it tastes nothing like what Special Shanghai Tim Sum has to offer)
Thanks to the existence of this blog, I finally got to have some authentic Suan La Tang by some real chefs! Ordered our usual fried dumplings, Suan La Tang and Hor Fun! Nom nom nom we went… (more like my brother and I heh)
Hot and Spicy soup 酸辣汤
This is definitely the main star of the entire stall. We all think that this dish is worthy of 4 stars out of 5! It was filled with eggs, silky tofu, pork slice, carrot, prawn, sotong that goes really well with the soup base, and cabbage to give the soup a little texture.
The soup was of just the right thickness, not too diluted and watery, neither was it overly starchy like the ones that I have at home. (yeah my parents aren’t very great cooks, oops!), the soup was a medley of sour and mild spicy. It was also very smooth on the throat; it leaves you wanting for more! The only regret I have about this dish is that we should have ordered a larger bowl!
Fried Dumplings 三鲜锅贴
Not the best that we had, but definitely not too shabby! The skin of the dumpling was fried till it was extra crispy. Luckily it wasn’t too thick, so it wasn’t very “gerlat”! What we liked about the skin of the dumpling was that unlike other normal dumplings, the skin had some seasoning to it which made it rather tasty. The meat filling inside was average, since you can’t really go wrong with that. Bought 10 dumplings and my brother and I ate it all before my parents had the chance to sink their teeth into it. Sorry not sorry!
Hor Fun 炒河粉
This dish was the least appetising amongst all, which also meant that my parents had to finish most of it. (Do you see the pattern now?)The Hor Fun utilized the exact same ingredients as the Hot and Spicy soup by transforming the soup base to a noodle dish. However, the gravy of the Hor Fun was slightly on the plain side, the Hor Fun was clearly lacking of the “wok” smell, which every good Hor Fun should have. Then again, this is clearly not their specialty based on their name!
It seemed only apt that Special Shanghai Tim Sum finally made its way to the Maxwell Food Centre and joined the many other famous food stalls located at the very same food centre. If you’re a huge fan of Sze Chuan Hot and Spicy soup (Suan La Tang), this stall is a must go! Have yet to find a stall that is better than this. While you’re at it, do give their dumplings a try too! (and give the Hor Fun a miss) This has always been my childhood favourite and that hasn’t and will not change.
