Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood owns three stalls in Alexandra Village Food Centre, not a common sign for a hawker in Singapore and perhaps signifies the popularity and endorsement of their zi char dishes.

Helmed by a young chef, the passion in cooking has led Chris Star Yong Kwang BBQ seafood to become an in-demand go to place for a taste of some good zi char dishes by the local.

Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($16)

Salted Egg Pork Ribs ($16)

One of the best-selling items and chef recommendations on the menu, chunk of deep fried pork was tender and juicy, thick layer of salted egg gravy slathering over the pork ribs was tantalising, the bursting and savoury of the salted egg was reasonably good and one of the dishes worth to try here. BBQ Stingray ($18/$22)

BBQ Stingray ($18/$22)

Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood is famous for their seafood and it will be kind of inexcusable without a seafood item on the order list, to say the least it is the highlight or the star dish here.

There is not many cooking styles defined for this cartilaginous fish, every stingray ended in the kitchen seems to present the best in the spicy-infused sambal chili sauce, even better if wrapped under a sheet of banana leave.

Besides the freshness of the fish, the sambal chili sauce is paramount to seal the fate of a good or bad BBQ stingray, it is beyond the basic of onions, lime, chili and cincalok but the right spices in combination to bring up the right flavour, glad to say that Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood delivered the dish in an impressive way that good enough to keep you going and trying to salvage to the last bit of the meat. Yes, it was spicy and may pose some challenge to those less tolerable with the burning sensation, but that is what makes the dish worth to go for, somehow it just needs the shiokness to call it a fulfilling dish.

Sambal Kang Kong ($8/$12)

Sambal Kang Kong ($8/$12)

The Sambal Kang Kong was ordinary in the standard and nothing worth to mention, it has a similar taste to the sambal chili sauce used in the stingray dish, but the blending with a vegetable dish may not yield the same results, perhaps it needs some twists to reach the needed balance to impress. Our verdict

Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood is good with the sambal stingray and salted egg pork rib, we may not venture the full menu but the stall delivered the quality and taste for those dishes we tried, it is a work of a young chef and definitely deserved a thumb up.
