SET Contemporary Cuisine@ POMO Singapore

Located on the fringe of Orchard, SET Contemporary Cuisine is a new restaurant at PoMo Selegie Road serving contemporary cuisine at affordable prices. With an alfresco area overlooking the shop houses along Prinsep Street, semi-private booths as well as individual rooms to cater for private events and big groups, it is a simple and yet cosy place.

SET’s Asian fusion menu is created by Chef Erick Chun, a chef who started out as a butcher and slowly worked his way up.

SET Contemporary Cuisine is now offering flexible set lunch and dinner menus, which we were invited to review: a 5-course lunch @$28.80++ and a 6-course dinner @$38.80++ respectively, both courses consist of chef starter, cold dish, soup, main course and dessert, while the dinner menu also includes a Grilled King Mushroom side dish.

Cold dishes:

Cheese and Bacon Mushroom Gratin

Deceptively simple, and eaten with old school white bread buttered on one side, this kickstarted the whole dinner well, and was neither too salty nor cloying.

Prawn Roll with Pork Floss

Peach, lettuce, mayonnaise, prawn and pork floss. The skin was delicately thin but the sweet pork floss overpowered the prawn and masked the sweetness of the prawns.

Huai San Carpaccio

Topped with beetroot and peach, the Huai San used was very crunchy and sweet, while the toppings were on the tangy side.

Smoked Duck Breast salad

Refreshing with a citrus dressing.

Tomato Caprese

Mozzarella foam with sea salt on top of a slice of tomato, the cheese was light and somehow was reminiscent of the cheese we ate in our childhood.

Salmon Gravlax

Smoked in-house, savoury and good!

Grilled King Oyster Mushroom

Served with truffle foam (who doesn’t love truffle!), the oyster mushroom had a bit of a charred flavour on while moist and juicy on the inside. Topped with teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise, this dish is one to look out for!

Miso Soup with Sake

Served in a cute little cup, it was a bit too salty!

Double Boiled Herbal Chicken

Hearty and homely, the herbal fragrance was very prominent.

Roasted Pumpkin with Truffle

Smooth and creamy with a light tinge of pumpkin and truffle.

Mushroom Velouté with Peanut Butter

Interesting blend of flavours, mushrooms used were grilled so there was a bit of a burnt taste to it. A polarising dish, you either love it or hate it!

Main Course:

Marinated Rack of Lamb

Meat was extremely tender, it went well with the black pepper sauce that was drizzled on the lamb. Lovely!

Roasted Beef Tenderloin

Another dish that was extremely tender and juicy, this was something that we couldn’t get enough of.

Grilled Snapper with Salsa

A little tough and dry, the salsa helped make it taste a little more appetising with its tangy flavours.

Baby pork Back ribs

Steamed before grilling, the pork ribs were lathered in Chinese barbecue sauce, easily falling off the bone and melts in your mouth.

Roasted Chicken Pullet

Once again very tender, the boneless chicken was served with creamy mushroom sauce and stuffed with chestnuts!

Gelato with Poached Pear

The pear was poached in cooking red wine and raw sugar – very savoury while the gelato was sweet, we personally thought that the flavours were way too clashing. The vanilla gelato on its own however was extremely fine and smooth.

Pistachio Panna Cotta

Fragrant, creamy yet light with crushed pistachio bits inside.

Espresso Creme Brûlée

The coffee fragrance was very light and it blended very well with the creme brûlée! Smooth and light, a must try!

Home-made Cake of the Day (Coconut Chocolate Cake)

Moist, light and fluffy.

Overall, if you are looking for a convenient place for a good chill-out with reasonable food quality and price, SET Contemporary Cuisine can be a good choice. Recommended dishes are Cheese and Bacon Mushroom Gratin, Double Boiled Herbal Chicken, Roasted Beef Tenderloin, Marinated Rack of Lamb, Baby pork Back ribs, Huai San Jello and Espresso Creme Brûlée.
