Soi Polo Fried Chicken – Good Food at Bangkok 2019

Sawadee krap! Bangkok! Here we come again!

We finally made our return to Bangkok after our last trips that was years ago, My lovely wife’s trip objective was crystal cleared – eat and eat, shop and shop! Wife bought with her 4 empty luggage (we came back with five actually !), For the food, I have only one stomach with me but wife seems to have more spare stomach with her this round judging from the long list of food exploration itinerary that she has prepared way in advance of the trip.

We stayed at the hotel which is about 20 mins walk from the nearest train station, Though I kept complaining the long distance walk but wife felt the walk helped to shred off some calories after a full stomach, when come to food, wifey always has the upperhand, no choice, walk lor…

Soi Polo Fried Chicken – Bangkok

Our first destination was the Michelin Bib Gourmand Soi Polo Fried Chicken, a crew of local TV media was filming and interviewing the owner when we were there, the popularity of the stall will likely to get another boost with its entered the hall of fame in the culinary world.

Polo fried chicken

Soi Polo Fried Chicken has a coffeeshop setting and a zichar type of menu, there is no nearby BTS Skytrain station and accessing the place will need the help of the Tuk-Tuk or Taxi ride, we choose to walk since it is within the walking distance from our hotel.

Besides the signature fried chicken, we ordered the local Thai Basil minced meat and the Thai vermicelli just to have a taste of the local dishes.

Polo fried chicken, Basil with minced meat, Thai Vermicelli

The fried chicken was non-battered and just deep fried directly in a big wok of boiling oil, the chicken skin was thin and not much of fat underneath so you can enjoy the skin with less guilt, meat was a bit dry but tender, flavour will not blow you away but we have to agree the crispy garlicky topping and some sour-tasted spices in combination were the star, it helped elevate the overall flavour of the fried chicken by few notches, without the special topping, Soi Polo Fried Chicken could well be another ordinary fried chicken on the street.

Basil Minced meat

The Thai basil minced meat and Thai vermicelli may not be too accommodating to our taste buds, the overwhelming saltiness with the basil meat and fiercely hot spicy Vermicelli probably more accustomed to the local.

Our verdict

The best way to enjoy the Soi Polo Fried Chicken perhaps is to go with a bottle of Thai Chang craft beer, if you are nearby, it is still worth the efforts to have a bite of this famous fried chicken especially the remarkable special sour and fragrant garlicky topping. You probably can give the rest of the dishes on the menu a miss.

Of course, the important supports from the wife's Ping and the son's Sen got to be mentioned as well, as it is our passion about food and an important catalyst that bond us together as a family.
