Necessary Provisions
Hidden in an area that is almost inaccessible to those who don’t drive, lies Necessary Provisions, a simple and casual café that targets those living in the neighbourhood. The entire café was like a glass box, (we had difficulty trying to figure out where the door was because it all looked the same!) walking in, the entire décor was very minimalistic; the walls were all painted black. At 3pm in the afternoon, the café was still bustling with energy as it was filled with friends/family having their afternoon tea, or those that are rushing their last minute projects.
Thankfully for us, we snagged up the last available table, and we placed our order for a slice of Pandan Chiffon Cake, a slice of German Chocolate Cake, a Beef Pastrami Sandwich, and their weekend specials: Savoury French Toast and Mum’s Beehoon. For drinks, we got ourselves Iced Latte and Hot Chocolate.
Pandan Chiffon Cake ($4.00)
Soft, moist and dense, the pandan cake was full of natural pandan fragrance. We loved this one!
German Chocolate Cake ($5.00)
Reasonably tasting chocolate chiffon cake, it’s got a layer of sweet white chocolate (?) with walnut and shreds of coconut to create a nice blend of flavours with the not-so-sweet chiffon cake.
Beef Pastrami Sandwich ($9.00)
Bread was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, the beef pastrami was also tasty, tender and easy to chew on; with some additional brie (cheese) and wholegrain mustard to complete the picture. The sandwich was also served with a serving of house salad that consisted of some greens topped with olive oil, nothing too fancy.
Savoury French Toast ($5.00)
Sprinkled with some black pepper and additional salt on the side, it was an interesting rendition of the normally sweet French toast. The toast was soaked in the egg, making the toast one that is more moist than crispy.
Mum’s Beehoon ($4.00)
Normal fried beehoon with a rather kickass belachan chilli, when mixed together and paired with a thin slice of luncheon meat, this was a rather homey dish. (Definitely an apt name!)
Iced Latte ($5.50)
Very smooth and rich, the latte was obviously made from fresh coffee beans.
Hot Chocolate ($6.00)
Smooth and not too sweet, this cup of hot chocolate unlike others, is made from dark chocolate. Healthier version I guess? Definitely not for the sweet-toothed!
Necessary Provisions is a must to check out if you’re living around the area, as it is perfect for an afternoon tea or a place to get together with friends for a short catch up session. You can be sure that it’ll be a pleasant experience whatever you order, from the coffee to the cakes to the mains, for every dish/item is made with passion.
