Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum 九龙香港点心
Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum occupies two adjacent stalls in a coffeeshop at Ang Mo Kio with handmade dim sum. The stall earns its name for its affordable prices and reasonable quality.
Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum has an extensive menu featuring most of the common dim sum items besides a few unique chef specialities dishes like the Yong Tau Fu, vinegar pork knuckle and crab congee.
BBQ Pork Puff ($4.0 for 4pcs)
The skin was fluffy and buttery but lacked crispiness, maybe the pork puffs were exposed to humid environment for a prolonged period and absorbed the moisture. Fillings were ordinary and nothing to shout about.
Hong Kong Style Liang Tofu ($5.0 for 5 pcs)
Served with meat wrapped in chili, bittergourd, eggplant, beancurd and a meat roll. The Fish and pork meat was somehow hard but the delectable gravy helped to fill the gaps.
Sesame Mango Shrimp Rolls ($3.8 for 3 pieces)
The coating was deep-fried to achieve a crispy texture, filling was the combination of the sweet mango and crunchy prawns, The sweet and savoury flavour with the mayonnaise made this dim sum dish a lovable item.
Crab Congee ($6.0)
The congee tasted plain though it was cooked with cuttlefish and flower crab. Good crab congee should be infused with all the goodness of the seafood in every of the rice grain, not a bowl of plain porridge.
Ginger & Vinegar Pig Trotter ($5.0)
Another chef recommendation, the serving portion was considered generous for the price we paid. The concoction gravy was well-balanced with the sweetness and sourness, what is lacking is probably the caramelised palm sugar and the ginger aroma. However, it is a dish that worth to try.
Our verdict
The freshness of the hand-made dim sum and reasonable prices are the main attraction of Kow Loon Hong Kong Dim Sum. However, some may not be too appealing for finicky diners.
