Rojak’s main ingredient cannot do away the traditional fruits and vegetables, the pineapple, cucumber, turnip, bean sprout, lemongrass, you tiau, tau pok, apples and occasionally the mango and others fruits. What determines a good or bad rojak is not so much with the types of fruits used, of course, freshness of the ingredients is important but the key influential factor is very much relied on the rojak sauce. The sauce usually consists of shrimp paste (belacan), oyster sauce, sugar, chili, tamarind paste, soy sauce and lime juice, by sprinkling the additional peanut powder and sesame seeds, the combination with the fruits could be a real sumptuous salad and appetizer.

The fruits used by the Kovan rojak were fresh, you tiau and tau pok were nicely roasted to give a crispy finishing, the rojak sauce was very rich and robust that blended well with the ingredients. Though, not the best in its class but we can say Kovan Rojak is definitely above the average standard and worth the try.

Kovan Market & Food Centre,

  1. Last Friday I went to the Rojak Stall at Toa Payoh Block 75 Toa Payoh Food Centre and request for more chilli and also a bit more sugar and was shock to be informed by the lady stall owner that if I wanted more Chilli and for extra sugar I have to pay S$0.50 for the extra sugar and she is not charging for the extra chilli. I told her to forget the extra sugar. I am wondering how many spoon of sugar she is giving for the S$0.50.
This is the last time I am buying from this stall even the Rojak is the Best in Singapore.
I am been buying Rojak from Hoover Rojak, for years, at at Block 90 Whampoa Drive and the stall owner always comply without asking for the extra charges. Their Rojak is way better than hers.
Please share as we do not this type of owner to make tons of money by unfair means.

  2. Sorry to hear the unpleasant experience, they should just do it as a service. A returning customer is worth more than 50 cents.
