Ji Ji Wanton already in its 3rd generation, originated from 山仔顶 or Shan zai ding, the place where South Canal Road is located or right opposite the OCBC building.

Ji Ji serves the Malaysia style dark sauce wanton mee instead of the more common chilli / tomato base sauce we used to find in local food centres. Most of the people will prefer one over another and each has their loyal supporters. For the glutton family, we are more use to the Chili / Tomato sauce base wanton noodles.

Ji Ji Wanton noodle comes with toppings like braised mushroom, char siew, vegetable and a bowl of wanton in the soup. We ordered additional fried wanton as the topping to evaluate the quality as well. The yellow noodle was slightly larger in diameter compared to the chili-base wanton mee which is not too common in Singapore.

The texture of noodle was chewy and cooked to the right springiness. Dark sauce blended well with the noodles with a tab of sweetness, the soup was tasty but the filling in the wanton was lacking the flavour, missing the  bits of flatfish? we think.

The char siew and the mushroom was well seasoned and flavourful. However, the fried wanton was a bit of letdown, the wanton skin was crispy but appeared to be overcooked, the meaty filling was dried and missing the moist as well as the flavour, something we wish it could be a bit more depth in the taste.

Overall, Ji Ji Wanton Noodle could be a big draw for those who like Malaysia type of dark sauce wanton noodle. The noodle, seasoning dark sauce and the char siew were commendable and obviously well-like by the supporters. For Ji Ji, the acclamation to be the wanton noodle specialist is well endorsed from the long queue in front of the stall. Of course, close to half of the century’s experience in the wanton noodle business does make a difference.
