JB Ah Meng Restaurant Review
The restaurant at Geylang Lorong 30 has all the needed accolades to portray itself as a novelty shop in the area. With Gordon Ramsay and Anthony Bourdain’s visit, it was once listed on the 2016 Michelin Bib Gourmand, putting JB Ah Meng on the foodies’ radar.
The restaurant occupying the corner shop at the junction of Geylang 30 and Geylang road, there is indoor air conditioning and outdoor sitting along the pavement.
The popular zichar restaurant is usually swamped with long queue of customers when the door is opened for business.
We reached there at 6pm but only outdoor seating was available.
JB Ah Meng is famous for their White Pepper Crab, San Lou Bee Hoon, Salted Egg Prawn Ball, Garlic Chilli Lala and fried fish head etc. with many signature dishes on the menu, we got to be selective with our limited stomach capacities.
J.B. San Lou Bee Hoon $7/11/14
The beehoon was fried with dried shrimps, veggies, squid and eggs. The bee hoon was fried till slightly charred and crispy in a round pancake shape, and remained soft and moist inside. Flavour was nice, though my wife would prefer the seasoning to be more pronounced for a more enthralling aroma.
Fried Garlic Chilli Clams (Lala) $16/24/32
The clam or lala was fried with garlic, chili and Chinese celery. We have no questions about the freshness of lala and the overall great taste. Thumbs up!
Stir-Fried Cameron Green Dragon vegetable $12/18/24
A combination of royale chives stir-fried with beansprouts seasoned with the iconic canned fish Fried Dace with Salted Black Bean. The ubiquitous canned fish food is an excellent seasoning to the veggies and it was a dish well received by all of us.
Salted Egg Prawn Ball $20/30/40
JB Ah Meng is innovative in differentiating the common dishes from other zichar stall. You will find corn kernels coated with salted egg. Besides the prawn balls in the dish, the corn kernels gave extra crunchiness to the deep-fried prawns. Not too bad in overall taste.
Deep Fried Fermented Bean With Pork Belly $12/18/24
Coated with fermented beancurd paste and spices, JB Ah Meng tried to make the sinful deep-fried pork belly less sinful with the use of the less fatty part of the belly. Nice crispy exterior, not juicy enough inside but remained tender.
Fried Egg with Tomato $12/18/24
The homely comfort dish was given the twist to produce an impressive dish we all like. The fluffy eggs were cooked with black fungus, tomatoes, chili, spring onion with a hint of sweetness, sourness and spiciness. Created an interesting flavour and different textures came together in this beautifully done concoction dish.
White Pepper Crab (Market price) $42
JB Ah Meng is definitely proud of their white pepper crabs, the stir-fried crab was mild with white pepper, with Chinese celery and ginger added for extra zest to this popular dish. However, the fragrance of the white pepper was a little underwhelming though the crab meat was firm and meaty. Maybe it was intended to keep the dish mildly spiced as to let the natural sweetness of the crustacean shine.
Most of the dishes at JB Ah Meng were created with the chef’s passion to please the tastebuds of the customers. They may be removed from the 2017 Michelin Bib Gourmand list for whatever reason, but the support from the public has not been dampened at all.
