Ivin’s Nyonya Specialties Review @ Heartland Mall, Kovan
Ivin’s Nyonya has been in the business for the last few decades and is a familiar name among the Peranakan food fans. Recent visit was a nostalgic experience since our last visit decades ago.
The casual Nyonya restaurant is located in the mall decorated in Peranakan traditional style. The serving size continues the traditional practice – small. It was full of excitement searching for the familiar taste. Will Ivin’s Nyonya able to continue the legacy and meet our expectations?
Ayam Buah Keluak $8.5
Ayam Buah Keluak is evocative of Peranakan food culture but, Ivin’s Nyonya Specialties has fallen short to produce something able to impress us. The gravy was too salty, diluted and lacked the right fragrance, though the chicken pieces were tender.
Honey Pork $8.5
This is one of the signatures at Ivin’s Nyonya Specialties, perhaps the only dish that remains embedded in our memories after all these years. The slight char and honey sweet glaze was pleasing, the texture of meat could be more malleable if given a few more pounding. Otherwise, it is probably one of the best dishes of the evening with the same old taste that we adored.
Garam Assam Fish Head $19.9
The Garam Assam or Spicy & Sour Fish Curry made of tamarind sauce stood out among all the dishes of the dinner. The well balanced spicy-sourish and seasoning gravy was appetising, though the sodium could be over-powering.
Sambal Kang Kong $6.9
You can forget about this dish and its substandard sambal chili and Kangkong texture.
Nyonya Chap Chye $6.5
Overall too ordinary and lacked the characteristics of a good Nyonya Chap Chye, there is plenty of room to improve.
Chye Poh Omelette $5.0
We were wondering if this dish was cooked just for entertainment purposes. Deeply disappointed with the Chye Poh or preserved salty radish that was way overwhelming.
Fried Ngo Hiang $5.0
If cheap is the catch here, compromising on the quality; we will prefer not to order the dish.
Pulot Hitam with Ice cream $3.5
The black glutinous rice was missing the aroma and texture of a good Pulot Hitam. What is a real good Pulot Hitam then? Try the same dessert ($3.5 as well) from House of Paranakan at Siglap (Frankel Estate) and you will understand what a good Pulut Hitam is.
We would expect a restaurant to have a higher standard compared to a hawker stall but it’s obviously not the case here.
Ivin’s Nyonya Specialties needs to seriously appraise the quality of some of their dishes again. Although cheap, the quality of the food was compromised, and will not go far for finicky diners. The heavy-handed use of sodium in many dishes is another concern.
