Guan Seng carrot cake @ Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre
“Where should we go for lunch? Can think of some new places or not?” Wife asked, kind of feeling bore with those frequent patronized makan places.
“Ok lor…” and here we come our first visit to the Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre – a secluded food centre in one of the smallest HDB estate.
All the way here and you wouldn’t want to miss out any good food but you just have one stomach and so much of the food ones can eat. Don’t care! We already prepared to stretch the stomach a bit more, just a bit more for the targeted four stalls…hmm…for only two of us.
Guan Seng Carrot Cake is one of the more popular stalls here, the newspaper cutting and accolades on displayed meant something and we went for the Michael Jackson version – Black and White.
Both white and black version were fried with the usual chai pok and eggs, the texture of the radish could be a little too firm to our liking and likewise the seasoning somehow was not robust enough to please our taste buds, maybe we are picky but we have tried many of the top rated fried carrot cake in Singapore, honestly speaking, there are some distance for Guan Seng Carrot Cake to do the catch up. (3.0/5.0)
The black version was missing the “kicks” as well, same as the white version, the most important and much needed carrot flavour was missing and what presented was another run-of-the-mills fried carrot cake. The radish may be caramelised nicely but the level of the sweetness from the sweet sauce seems to be overpowered and created imbalance in the overall flavour. (3.1/5.0)
For carrot cake lovers like us, Guan Seng Carrot Cake may not be able to satisfy our taste buds especially the texture and flavour of the radish, however, Guan Seng Carrot Cake may good enough if you are looking for an average fried carrot cake stall just to meet your craving for this local staple.
Price range from $3 and above.
