Goldleaf Restaurant @ Amoy Street

goldleaf restaurant

Goldleaf Restaurant pioneered the concept of a restaurant that specialized in porridge in Singapore back in the 1970s, served with Taiwanese dishes tweaked to suit the local palate. Located along Orchard Road back then, it named celebrities such as Theresa Teng among its regulars and was famous for signature dishes like mei cai kou rou and pan-fried codfish.

The restaurant had undergone a series of relocations and now setting the foot at Amoy Street, we are invited to be part of the celebration in conjunction to their 45th anniversary.

Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables ($16)

goldleaf restaurant

Pork belly was stewed over an extended time to achieve the tenderness, the preserved vegetables (mei cai) added the needed flavour to bring out the best renditions of this dish.

Crispy Tamban Fish with Sesame $10.00

Tamban fish also known as deep-bodied sardine is a small fish species with plenty of fine bone. The best way to eat this fish is deep fried to completely break down the bone to allow you to chew down the whole fish completely. The fish was crisped to its bone and the dark sauce heightened the fervor of the dish making a good accompaniment to go with the porridge.  We would like to try their cod fish next round which is their signature dish and has raved about by many.

Beancurd with Pork Floss (Cold Dish) $8.00

You can appreciate the beauty of tofu simply to go with light soy sauce and a little of spring onions. The Japanese chilled tofu or Hiyayakko is the master of the dish and Goldleaf has given the silky white block of beancurd a twist seasoned with thick soy / oyster sauce and topped with the pork floss.  A typical easy to prepare and economic dish but go well with a bowl of watery porridge. There are more interesting tofu dishes on the menu eg. Volcano Beancurd with Chicken / prawn or fish slices that we shall try in future.

Bean Sprouts with Salted Fish $10.00

The shape of the pizza makes it aesthetically pleasing to the young and old. The Chye Po (preserved radish) with veggies makes it a dish best for the porridge connoisseurs. The Omelette was beautifully deep fried embody appealing qualities – tenderly coatings, eggy yellow surfaces and fluffy interiors. The presentation is enticing to the tastebuds and my son is satisfied with the texture and taste.

Golden Prawn Rolls $8.00

A rustic food that made from a 70 years recipe, not packed with flour but genuine fresh ingredients to produce this popular dish.

Steamed Pork Pattie With Salted Egg Yolk $10.00

goldleaf restaurant

Another typical home cooked food best for porridge.

Desserts are the Yam Paste (orh nee), Herbal Jelly (Gui Lin Gao) and Longan Tofu. All of homemade and the yam paste stands out among all with its smooth and fine yam paste with the right sweetness.
