Flavour Flings café @ Hougang – simple café in the heartlands
Introducing the newest café on the block… literally. At this time of writing, Flavour Flings has been open for only less than a week! Run by a lovely and friendly Muslim couple, while the café itself is not halal certified (yet), all ingredients used are halal. Although this is the first time running a cafe, they are definitely not new to the café scene as they are also café hoppers themselves.
The new café is located in the Hougang heartland area among other eateries.
Getting a brand new café set up without any prior F&B experience posed a real challenge to the owner. Keeping an eye on their budget, Flavour Flings café managed their costs by doing many of the decorations and fixtures in the shops themselves! Everything turned out impressive, with a warm rustic feel thanks to unfinished wood and touches of modernity.
The wooden fixtures were actually hammered together by the owner after fumigating the wood to make sure they are termite free, and sandpapered to smoothen out the surfaces so it is safe for us. With an eclectic collection of second-hand furniture, exposed concrete flooring, and little personal touches, we liked how it felt unpretentious and welcoming.
Iced chocolate ($6.50)
Huge portion of rich dark cocoa powder goodness to satisfy even the most rabid chocolate lover, the drink was of the right richness and with just the right touch of sweetness.
Cafe Mocha ($6.00)
The coffee wasn’t too smooth; probably due to the fact that the beans they got could be new and we could taste the acidity of the coffee beans.
Fling’s Noodles ($15.00)
The pasta itself was slightly undercooked so it was a little hard – a few seconds more away from perfection. That said, it was cheesy and yet not overly creamy and cloying, which is rather hard to attain. Paired with some mushrooms and topped with a perfect poached egg and spring onions, this was simple but good!
Eggs Benedict ($15.00)
Sadly for us, we could not enjoy the authentic Eggs Benedict experience as they ran out of brioche toast. That was quite a pity as the other components of the eggs Benedict complemented each other very well! This was served with herb seasoned potatoes and beef bacon.
The Awesome One ($11.00)
This is the chef’s specialty, the pancakes were soft and fluffy with a homemade feel. Served with salted caramel, we were expecting it to be very sweet but surprisingly it wasn’t! The pancakes blended very well with the bananas, kind of awesome!
Our verdict, seeing the owner going around table to table gathering feedback, and from the few main dishes we had evaluated, we could sense their sincerity – and it’s heartwarming that Flavour Flings cafe is putting in such an effort to ensure the tastiness and quality of the food. The only comment we have is the pricing which could be a little on the high side for a café that is situated in the heartlands. On that note – we believe some fine tuning is all it takes and they should ready to take off!
