East Bistro @Sembawang 东小馆
Helmed by former head chef of Michelin awardee, Lei Garden restaurant, you can expect some standard from this eatery. Located at the corner along the same stretch of the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon, East Bistro is popular for its Hong Kong Dim Sum and Chinese cuisine.
Mushroom Char Siew Bao $3.6
The filling was reasonably flavourful but it was the skin of the bao that highly impressed us. We instantly fall in love at the first bite of the fine and soft texture. One of the highly recommended dim sum to try here.
Xiao Long Bao $4.2
The skin of the bao was not refined enough and the oozing juice we expected was not at all present. East Bistro has a lot more work to do on this dim sum item.
Sichuan Chilli Oil Wanton $4.5
Lacked the spiciness of Sichuan flavor, not recommended.
Pan Fried Radish Cake $4.0
You can taste the aroma of white radish in every bite, the only drawback is that the outer skin is not crispy enough and not charred.
Rice Rolls with Char Siew (BBQ Pork) $4.6
The skin of the rice rolls was too thick and nothing to shout about with the char siew filling as well.
Salted Egg Yolk Custard Croissant $4.2
The croissant looked fairly ordinary but surprisingly, the salted egg yolk custard was salivating. It was packed with the essence of salted egg lava and one can never be enough. We made three repeat orders just to satisfy our lust.
Pig Trotters with Ginger & Black Vinegar $7.0
The pig trotters was full of fat and we can’t find a piece of lean meat. You may think the fat as gelatin but we prefer not to opt for it, as the texture was not tender and seasoning lacked flavour as well. Quite a disappointment.
Egg plant with Salted Fish in Claypot $10/15/20
Deep-fried eggplant was later transferred to the claypot and further seasoned with various condiments and salted fish. Eggplant was soft and able to absorb the essence of the seasoning, a nice and delicious dish.
Omelette w Silver Fish $10/15/20
Let’s be clear, the omelette is not cooked with the Silver Fish that we know as a common bug that crawls through the books or the book shelves in the household. It is actually called lancelets, a small, eel-like fish about 4 to 5cm long and commonly eaten in China. Sometimes the power of wrong translation can be scary.
Coming back to the Omelette, it was cooked with Silver fish!!! Alright….with the lancelets, which could use bit more work with the seasoning to enhance the fluffy omelette, just ordinary in our opinion.
Deep Fried Prawns with Salted Egg Sauce $12/18/24
The prawns were coated with flour and deep-fried to create a crispy coating, then doused with salted egg sauce and curry leaves. We just hope that East Bistro can be more generous with the salted egg sauce.
Deep Fried Green Bean $10/15/20
Long beans were deep-fried in oil before being pan-fried with minced meat, garlic and other spices. Crisp texture but the seasoning was a bit more on the bland side.
Chef Special “Pao Fan” $6.8/13.6
It was porridge with finely-cut chicken and cooked in a flavourful broth with fragrant, aromatic Chinese celery. However, the porridge is cleverly twisted with the addition of crispy deep fried rice grains and sesame seeds. It instantly ‘zhnged’ up the bowl of ordinary porridge with the usual soft rice grains texture with another layer of crispiness, and the layering effect created another dimension to the dish. An interesting way of appreciating porridge.
The restaurant was almost full house way before the peak lunch hour during our weekend visit. The reasonably good quality food, no GST and service charge at East Bistro are the main attractions here. Five of us spent total of $108 and walked out with satisfied tummies. Worth a revisit to East Bistro? You bet.
