Crystal Jade Kitchen Tampines Mall

Review written by Glutton Princess – QiQi

Crystal Jade has been in Singapore since 1991, even before I was born. Since then, it has evolved to become a huge Food & Beverage giant, with more than 100 outlets in 9 countries. I remember since  young, I would always look forward to visits to Crystal Jade because I absolutely adore their Congee. It’s a dish that I will always order without fail.

Somehow, sometime along the road, the glutton family stopped making trips to Crystal Jade, and there goes my beloved Congee. (Too expensive maybe?) That changed when my mum and I were in the mood for something light last week! We decided to have Dim Sum, and off we went to Crystal Jade Kitchen at Tampines.

Since there were just the 2 of us, we didn’t have to wait long for a seat. We got ourselves the Sliced Fish with Preserved Egg and Parsley Congee, Baked BBQ Pork with Honey Pastry, Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Shrimp & Preserved Meat, and the Pan Fried Rice Roll with Spicy Shrimp Paste. The staffs there were rather efficient, our dim sum was served up to us in no time!

Sliced Fish with Preserved Egg and Parsley Congee

The congee had a tinge of sweetness to it, which made it rest well on my palate. The fish was soft and thinly sliced, just the way I like it. However, my mum found some bones attached to one of the slices she took, so you might want to be careful! The fish, egg, parsley, congee served together with the crispy crackers was just a harmony of many different flavours. Sweet and savoury all at once!

Baked BBQ Pork with Honey Pastry

This is a MUST-TRY for everyone out there. If you’re at Crystal Jade, do not forget about this! The honey pastry was so flaky and of just the right thickness. Not too thick till you get full from the pastry and not the filling. Talking about the filling, the BBQ pork was absolutely delightful! The pork was shredded into thin slices, so it was real easy on the mouth; and the sauce used to flavour the pork was just sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Pan Fried Carrot Cake with Dried Shrimp & Preserved Meat

My mum couldn’t stop raving about how Crystal Jade has the best carrot cake ever, the last time she was here. So we ordered it and regretted our decision. My mum and I both thought that this was… dull. When we first took a bite into the carrot cake, my mum and I were both left speechless. Not the good kind whereby you will go on and grab another bite, but the kind of speechless where you’re trying to figure out what is it that you just ate. It was rather plain, the essence of the shrimp and preserved meat barely made any difference to the carrot cake. You might want to forgo this one unless you love all kinds of carrot cake. (like my brother)

Pan Fried Rice Roll with Spicy Shrimp Paste

It was served with some sesame sauce, but I think it tastes better without it. The spicy shrimp paste was salty, spicy and definitely very flavourful. The rice roll was soft and chewy, together with the tasty spicy shrimp paste, my mum and I couldn’t stop wanting more of it!

All in all, Crystal Jade Kitchen is the place to go if you’re looking for some reasonably priced and tasty Dim Sum. If you take up our suggestions, you won’t go wrong! Psst, they are also having a limited time only promotion for Hi-tea varieties, at 30% off! Do go to their website for more details!
