Originating from Thailand, this cross between a hotpot and steamboat style of eating has been raging in the Singaporean food scene lately. For those of you who like BBQs and steamboats, Mookata will be the definition of “the best of both worlds”. Pork lard is placed at the dome of the grill and the fat that drips down cooks your meat. The meat juices and pork lard seep into the soup that looks like a moat around the dome, flavoring it immensely. Definitely not for the calorie conscious but amazing nonetheless!
Voted top 10 by UFM100.3 along with other awards, Soi 51 Mookata offers a tasty and affordable place to enjoy some authentic, lip-smacking Mookata buffet. Priced at a mere $22 nett for adults and $12 for children (1.2m and below), Soi 51 boasts a range of 60 food items to choose from. You’ll definitely be spoiled for choice!

A former chef from SHATEC, the owner fervently believes in providing a huge variety of food for customers to choose from; catering to different taste buds. They have a selection of marinated meats from pork to chicken and beef, seafood items like fresh mussels, flower crabs and clams. To top it off, they also have a healthy selection of veggies and Yong Tau Foo items.
Love all things spicy? Don’t miss out on their Spicy Chicken, pork and black pepper marinated meats. All the proteins are marinated in-house by them, using a blend of spices and ingredients. Being a lover of spice and strong tastes, it was one of my favourites of the night.
As for those who prefer milder tastes, go for the black pepper/ garlic marinated meats available. Don’t judge a book by its cover; though the raw meat looks like nothing much, they are actually seasoned very well. The meat is well marinated, and when grilled to form a nice char on the exterior it’s damn shiok.
Soi 51 Mookata On to the Seafood Selection!
The shellfish we had were sweet, meaty and fresh. Plonk them in your soup base for an extra flavorful seafood stock or place them on the grill if you like. Skip the fish slices if you’re not a fan of tasteless frozen fish.
When eating Mookata, one important aspect is the dip! Their homemade chilli sauce is slightly viscous and piquant with sour notes. Definitely not for those who can’t take spice. For those die-hard fans of their chilli sauce, fret not for they also sell them in jars priced at $5 per bottle. Now you can use it as a dip for anything and everything all day errr-day!
Don’t you hate it when you smell like barbecued meat after leaving a mookata restaurant? Soi 51 Mookata is located at the entrance of Geylang Lorong 12, facing the main road, situated in a spacious and airy coffee shop. I left the place with nary a hint of BBQ smell lingering on my clothes! Plus, the cooling location means eating without the excessive perspiration.

All in all, this is definitely a place for you to hang out with a huge bunch of friends over dinner/supper, especially for the East-siders. They close at 1 am but let them know if you have a large group of people wanting to dine there after 1 am and they’ll arrange it!
