Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice 6

The legend of Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice started back in the 70’s from a small stall in Chinatown selling chicken rice. Over the years, garner the rave reviews and spread of words, the small chicken rice stall has evolved rapidly and now with many branches in a restaurant setup serving the popular white sauce chicken rice, to add more variaties, Boon Tong Kee has diversified the operations to include Zi Char into their menu to provide the customer additional choice.

We have not visited Boon Tong Kee for a long time, simply because there is no shortage of good chicken rice stalls around to fulfil our craving of the delicacy. However, it is fair to give BTK a shoot before we conclude our review.

Steamed white chicken rice

Steamed white chicken is the signature dish from Boon Tong Kee, the white chicken served has very thin skin with little fat. However, the chicken was not as tender as what we had in the old time, the sauce doused over the chicken was not able to accentuate the taste of the ordinary white chicken, the combination is the missing in the finest of this Boon Tong Kee’s speciality.

The chicken rice was cooked to achieve a good texture, taste wise may not be as fragrance as many of other chicken rice but overall is acceptable.

Roasted chicken

The roasted chicken was surprisingly good, the chicken was roasted to a glistening finished with a paper thin crisp skin intact. The roasted chicken was served hot from the oven and the meat was much tendered compared to the white chicken, the well seasoning made the chicken a salivating dish that ones must try. In our opinion, the roasted chicken was more superior to the white steamed chicken. A mere $6 for half of the chicken (spring chicken) was worth every cent.

Sambal KangKong

My chubby boy’s favourite, a dish we have to order everywhere we go. The Sambal sauce was not too over powered or too spicy, the kang kong was crunchy and fresh, a good accompaniment dish to go with the meal.

Overall, the steamed white chicken rice was somehow lost it old time glory, it was the roasted chicken took the limelight. Not so bad, at least some good news for Boon Tong Kee.
