Bak Kee Teochew Satay Bee Hoon 峇记潮洲沙嗲米粉
If Satay Bee Hoon is one of your favourite local dishes, Bak Kee is definitely not a stranger to you. Located in Redhill Food Centre, the stall is consistently named one of the best Satay Bee Hoon Kings in Singapore – though there really aren’t that many Satay Bee Hoon stalls around in Singapore.
The plate of satay bee hoon ($3.50) came with beansprouts, kangkong, tau pok, cockles, cuttlefish, pork slices and liver, drenched with thick satay sauce; the nutty fragrance wafts in the air and perks up your appetite immediately. The sauce was not anywhere as spicy when compared to Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon from Bukit Timah food centre. But the satay sauce was chunkier, which created a grittier texture with the peanuts in the succulent sauce.
The toppings were cooked appropriately except for the texture of the cuttlefish, which we hoped could have been more tender, nonetheless the rest of the ingredients were fresh and tasted agreeable. The bee hoon was cooked to a perfect texture and was not soggy, together with the flavorful satay sauce, the result was a well balanced dish with a savory taste that was truly enticing to the taste buds. By the way, the stall does sell its satay sauce in plastic bag, you can use it as a dip or easily whip up your own satay mee hoon dish at home.
We also ordered a plate of cuttlefish kangkong beehoon ($3) for review. The dish consists of kang kong, cuttlefish, pineapple, jellyfish, bee hoon and tau kwa, doused with a sauce made up of sweet sauce, chili sauce and sour plum sauce. This dish was a combination of various flavours, making up an extremely appetizing medley of sweetness, spiciness and sourness.
The level of spiciness was very mild and easily tolerable for anyone. We could find nothing to fault about the ingredients, which blended well with the sauce and was a great appetizer for the satay bee hoon.
Overall, Bak Kee Teochew Satay Bee Hoon was delectable and lived up to its accolades. Equally luscious is the cuttlefish kang kong bee hoon – both these dishes were very satisfying and praiseworthy. We already know what to order if we’re ever in the neighbourhood again!
