Baja Fresh Mexican Grill Singapore
Mexican Grill or Maxican food is not something too familiar with the glutton family, not just the food but the pronunciation of the word “Baja” Fresh already thrown in some challenges to all of us. Some mentioned it is not pronounced a “Ba-Ja” or “Ban-Jan” but rightfully should be “Ba-Ha”! The “J” here followed the Spanish way of pronunciation of “H”. So “Baja Fresh” should be “Baha Fresh” instead. Who is right? Don’t know, we may need a linguist for advice.
Baja Fresh is a US based Mexican grill food chain and has been serving Mexican grill food for decades. We are thankful we got the chance to experience both the Baja Fresh home-delivery and on-site tasting treat.
Spicy Chicken Americano Tacos ($5.95 onwards)
Tacos is a traditional Mexican food, made of a corn or wheat tortilla filled with various proteins, vegetables and cheese, usually go with guacamole, salsa. Another interesting wrap but eat without wrapping the tortilla.
The Spicy Chipotle Chicken is a new addition this January; you can opt for them with Tacos (with or without Nachos), Burritos, or Quesadillas. The chicken at Baja Fresh is said to be “always fresh never frozen” so you can be guaranteed that the chicken’s juicy and tender! Seasoned in tangy chipotle, with pepper, lime and garlic, this is one refreshing option. The one that we tried was in the form of a taco, and there was fragrant Baja rice and savoury black beans to go with it. You can choose to eat the rice and beans together or separately, it’s tasty both ways!
Pork Quesadillas ($12.95 onwards)
A quesadilla is a flour tortilla or a corn tortilla filled with cheese and/or vegetables. Don’t let its plain look deceive you; this is easily one of the tastiest dishes we’ve had in a while. The grilled flour tortilla was held together with Monterey Jack Cheese and slow cooked American style pulled Pork Carnitas.
The pork was exceptionally tender and seasoned it formed the perfect blend with the cheese – each bite was fireworks in the mouth! It’s served with sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo but we guarantee the sauces are just an extra bonus and really not needed.
Chicken Ultimo Burrito (Chicken 16.40, Pork 18.40, Steak 20.40, Shrimp 20.40, Veggie 16.40)
A burrito consists of a grilled wheat flour tortilla wrapped with different filling, Fire-grilled Chicken, Pork Carnitas, Steak, grilled Shrimp etc. depends on the type of burrito, ingredients like cheese, rice, salsa, veggies & cilantro etc. are added to make this delicious wrap. The burrito was quite a big size and one burrito was good for two of us.
Said to be the king of all burritos, this one uses melted cheese, Baja rice, grilled vegetables, sour cream and Baja Salsa. You get to choose other meat options too, like Fire-grilled Chicken, Pork Carnitas, Steak, grilled Shrimp, mahi-mahi (fish). We had our burrito the Enchilado way, which means that the burrito is covered in red chile sauce & melted Jack cheese. The burrito was quite a big size and one burrito was good for two of us especially how it’s being smothered in cheese!
Tostada Salad ($12.95 onwards)
One thing we love about Baja Fresh is that they really live up to their name in terms of the freshness of the foods and it really shows through the salad. The greens were fresh, and paired with beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, salsa and some prawns! The crispy tortilla shell gave the whole dish an extra kick too, perfect for those looking for a light and guilt-free meal!
We figured that Baja Fresh isn’t too big on its desserts; the churros were over fried till the extent of it being extremely oily and way too crispy. We would’ve preferred it if the churros were fluffier.
Nachos ($12.95 onwards)
A tortilla chip that go well with dipping into the guacamole (Avocados), salsa (tomatoes-based but mildly hot), pico de gallo (salad made from chopped tomato, onion, coriander leaves etc) jalapenos & sour cream, a nice “cracker” to go with the meal.
While Quesadilla was well loved by all, the Tostada Salad, Burritos and the Tacos were equally enticing. Thanks Baja Fresh for introducing us to another great cuisine. If you have not experienced Mexican food before, we think Baja Fresh is where you can start. For the Glutton family, we are now very much adore it.
