Albert Street Prawn Noodle (亚峇街大虾面), Singapore @ Old Airport Road Food Centre – Missing the wow effect
There are two famous prawn noodle stalls at Old Airport Road Market & Food Centre: Albert Street Prawn Noodle, with a long history that can be traced back to 1963, and Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle, which we have just reviewed. Sadly, Albert Street’s only branch at Lavender Food Court has closed its shutters, along with the closure of the food centre recently.
We went there over a weekend and the queue wasn’t that long. However, Albert Street Prawn Noodle seemed to have slightly more patrons than its counterpart Whitley Road Prawn Noodle. Does it mean Albert Street is better in quality and taste? We shall find out.

We ordered the dry version prawn mee ($5) which came with a big bowl of soup with sliced prawns and pork ribs submerged in the stock.
The bowl of soup was crimson intense, and was not strong in taste but had an almost artificial sweetness. The prawn flavour here was also not as distinct as compared to the others we have tasted eg. Beach road prawn mee, Blanco Court prawn mee and Jalan Sultan prawn mee, just to name a few. In general, we found that the broth was better than Whitley Road Prawn Noodle’s just a few stalls away, however, it was also missing a wow effect from the lack of seafood savoriness.
The prawns were sweet and springy, pork ribs were fatty without much lean meat, but was tender when bitten into. The mee came with curry powder served in the spoon for additional flavouring, you can add it to the soup or to the noodle to perk up the taste.
The texture of the noodle was fine but the seasoning sauce was a big disappointment, we already had our reservations about the bland taste from Whitley Road Prawn Noodle, but Albert Street seemed to suffer the same fate, if not worse. Though there were fried shallot and additional chili powder, all these efforts proved futile. In the end, it was a bowl of plain tasting and depressing prawn mee.
Overall, Albert Street Prawn Noodle served up a more generous portion of prawn mee as compared to Whitley Road Prawn Noodle, and the soup was tastier, though we still wouldn’t call it impressive. Looking at the many accolades displayed at the stall, we weren’t able to truly appreciate why – perhaps a case of faded glory?
